Living in Portugal

Despite the distance, Portugal is a popular destination for Luxembourgish students. In this guide, you will find everything you need to know to plan your studies there.

Choice of University and City

Portugal has many well-regarded universities, particularly in Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra. It is important to research the study programmes carefully, including the language of instruction (Portuguese or English) and the admission requirements.

Accomodation

Finding accommodation in Portugal can be quite challenging, especially in Lisbon and Porto. It is therefore important to start searching early, ideally 3 to 6 months in advance. There are various housing options available, including student residences, shared flats, and private accommodation.

Platforms such as Uniplaces, Idealista, and OLX can be helpful when looking for a suitable place to stay. Facebook groups specifically aimed at students are often another good option. However, it is important to remain cautious and be aware of potential scams. Never make any payments before a contract has been signed.

Cost of Living

The cost of living in Portugal is generally lower than in Luxembourg, although expenses can vary depending on the city. Lisbon, in particular, is considered the most expensive city in the country. It is therefore important to plan a budget in advance that covers the main expenses, such as accommodation, food, transport, and leisure activities.

Administration

Documents

To study in Portugal and complete the necessary administrative procedures, you will need a valid identity card or passport, as well as proof of enrolment at a university. In addition, it is highly recommended to apply for a Portuguese tax number (NIF), as it is often required for various administrative matters, such as renting accommodation or opening a bank account.

You can find more information on the portuguese tax number here:

It is important to always have a valid identity document and to carry it with you. In addition, it is recommended to register with the Luxembourg Embassy in Lisbon so that, in the event of problems or emergencies, it is easier to receive assistance.

It is important to complete your enrolment at the university and to familiarise yourself with the timetables, platforms and courses.

Transport

Large cities have an efficient public transport network (metro, bus, tram). Student passes are available at reduced prices, and in some cases public transport is even free for students under the age of 23.

Everday Student Life

The Portuguese higher education system differs somewhat from the Luxembourgish system. Grades are awarded on a scale from 0 to 20, with 10/20 being the minimum grade required to pass a course. Courses and assessments are much more focused on final exams than on continuous work throughout the semester, although this depends on the study programme and the university.

As far as language is concerned, there are more and more courses in English, but learning Portuguese is still a great help. It not only makes integration easier, but is also very useful in everyday life.

Portugal offers a very rich and lively student life. Students have the opportunity to get involved in student associations, take part in academic and social events, or practise different sports activities. These activities not only make it possible to meet new people, but also help students to integrate better into student life and Portuguese culture.

Main Portuguese Cities

Lisbon

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and also the largest student city in the country. It is home to the largest Luxembourgish community, and many Luxemburgish students  are present there.

Some of the best-known universities include the Universidade de Lisboa, ISEG, Nova SBE and Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics. Prices for a student room here usually range between €600 and €850 per month.

Lisbon is a cosmopolitan and dynamic city with many academic, cultural and professional opportunities. In addition, the city is very well connected by public transport. It is particularly suitable for students who are looking for a large city with many opportunities.

Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal and has a strong student culture. The best-known higher education institutions are the Universidade do Porto, Católica Porto and Porto Business School.

Housing prices for a student room average between €450 and €700 per month.

Porto offers a more relaxed atmosphere than Lisbon and is known for its strong sense of community and active nightlife. The city is ideal for students who are looking for a large city with a little more calm and a high quality of life.

Coimbra is one of the best-known student cities in Portugal and has a long university tradition. It is home to the Universidade de Coimbra, which was founded in 1290 and is one of the oldest universities in Europe.

Housing prices are lower here in comparison and range between €300 and €500 per month.

Coimbra has a very student-oriented atmosphere and remains strongly shaped by traditions. The city is particularly known for “Fado de Coimbra”, a traditional Portuguese music genre, and its many student customs. Coimbra is especially suitable for those looking for a classic student city with a strong sense of tradition.
